Surging Alumina Prices Reduce Profit at Chinese Aluminum Smelters, SMM Says

Despite rising aluminum prices, profit at aluminum smelters in China shrank as a result of sharply rising alumina prices.

SHANGHAI, May 31 (SMM) – Despite rising aluminum prices, profit at aluminum smelters in China shrank as a result of sharply rising alumina prices.

 The SMM average spot aluminum price climbed to 13,862 yuan/tonne in the week ending May 26, while the average alumina price in domestic four major markets jumped 7.54% to 2,473 yuan/tonne as of May 26.

Smelters surveyed by SMM reported an average profit of over 900 yuan/tonne in the week ending May 26.
